Celebrating Muslim Contribution to Sport, Darren Cheesman - GB Hockey Player Monday 02 April 2012
British Muslim Athlete, Darren Cheesman, talks about his motivations and his faith in the run up to the London 2012 Games.
“Every single person has the ability to be amazing. Every single person has the ability to do great great things. It all comes down to 2 things: Do you want it enough? And are you prepared to do everything it takes to achieve that thing?â€
Darren Cheesman is a husband, father and world class GB hockey player. Darren realises the benefit that he can have both to the sport and the community around him. He is a passionate hockey coach who regularly coaches children at his club and is also a mentor for the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. Over the last 5 years of being a Muslim, he sees no conflict between being British, English and Muslim.
“The London Olympics is going to be an amazing event. To have the Olympics in your home town is spectacular, it’s something that’s literally a once in a lifetime opportunity and team GB are fully prepared to bring back a load of Gold medals, silver medals, bronze medals, whatever it may be.â€
“In Islam we’re taught to respect the people around us, we’re taught to make sure that we’re integrating into the community, we’re being a benefit to every situation, to every person that we come into contact with and that’s exactly what we’re expected to do as British citizens as well. The 2 pretty much go hand in hand so I really don’t see a conflict between them.†- Darren Cheesman.
