| The Muslim Council of Britain welcomes the publication of a study carried out by the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia on acts of aggression and changes in attitudes towards Muslims post September 11. It presents the results for 15 EU member states. The report warns politicians and the media to refrain from demonising immigrants and asylum seekers. "This report confirms our fears that under cover of the 'war on terrorism' safeguards have been lowered on the reporting of Muslims by some sections of the media. Even leading politicians have used inflammatory language which can only contribute to feeding anti-Muslim feelings," said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the MCB.
The EUMC report can be downloaded from its web site (http://www.eumc.eu.int/publications/terror-report/index.htm).
Evidence for Islamophobia pre-September 11 was also uncovered in the study undertaken by the University of Derby(http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs/hors220.pdf). |
