| "A disgraceful decision and defies common sense" - MCB's statement Additional statements from Muslim community organisations:
Federation of Muslim Organisations,Leicestershire
"...[the] only thing we can do to prevent some Muslims making a complete mockery out of Islam is to disassociate ourselves from such acts done in the name of Islam"
Abdulkarim Gheewala, Chair of FMO, endorsing the call made to Sudanese President on behalf of the UK Muslims to free Ms. Gibbons.
Federation of Students Islamic Societies
“We are deeply concerned that the verdict to jail a school teacher due to what’s likely to be an innocent mistake is gravely disproportionate. What we have here is a case of cultural misunderstandings, and the delicacies of the matter demonstrate that it was not in the intention of Gillian Gibbons to imply any offense against Islam or Muslims. We hope that the Sudanese authorities will take immediate action to secure a safe release for Gillian Gibbons.”
Ali Al-Hadithi, FOSIS President
Ramadan Foundation, London
“The Ramadhan Foundation is disappointed and horrified by the conviction of Gillian Gibbons in Sudan. We urge the Sudanese President Mr. Bashir to intervene and pardon Gillian; she has not set out to demonise Islam."
Mr. Muhammad Umar, Chairman
FAIR (Forum
"FAIR strongly condemns the decision of the Sudanese authorities to sentence a British school teacher to 15 days in prison for naming a teddy bear "Mohammad" despite worldwide appeals from Muslims to show clemency. This is an outrageous conclusion to a farcical affair, which has little to do with Islam and everything to do with politics...once again, we strongly urge that the sentence be revoked and the teacher released immediately."
