Raising the Attainment of Muslim Pupils in London Schools
Wednesday 27 June 2007

London's schools have the most diverse pupil populations in the world, with an equally diverse range of talents and abilities. Many Muslim pupils within London's schools perform well, however others face specific barriers to fulfilling their potential. This creates problems for individuals and families, while this loss of skills also threatens London's labour market, the economy and the capital's future prosperity.

This conference, which is being organised by the Mayor of London, seeks to raise awareness of the issues involved and the underlying causes of educational inequalities amongst Muslim schoolchildren in London. The aim of the day is to find constructive solutions to these issues.

A distinguished panel of speakers will lead the discussion, including:

Tahir Alam, Chair, Education Committee, Muslim Council of Britain
Hamiyet Asan, Ethnic Minority Achievement Consultant, Learning Trust, Hackney
Dr Abdul Bari, Secretary General, Muslim Council of Britain
Professor David Gillborn, Professor of Education, Institute of Education, University of London
Professor Mark Halstead, University of Huddersfield
Abdi Hassan, Director, Ocean Somali Community Association
Shaynul Khan, Sustainability Manager, London Muslim Centre
Murad Qureshi, London Assembly Member
Nizam Raja, Chair, Association of London Governors
Bushra Nasir, Headteacher, Plashet Comprehensive School
Ruksana Yakoob, Primary and Secondary National Strategies Team, DfES
Jude Woodward, Senior Policy Advisor, Greater London Authority

There will also be time for questions and contributions. Make sure your views are heard. Register for the conference asap.
