YOUTH AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Campaigns
What is a Campaign?
A series of efforts or events energetically pursued to accomplish a purpose.
More simply, a campaign is the gathering of people that want to act on an issue they all care about.
MCB Youth Affairs Committee campaigns are led by young people for young people and represent the main concerns of young Muslims across the UK.
The MCB Youth Affairs Committee believes that campaigning is a vital way for young people to make an impact on the decision makers that affect our lives and how the country is run. All too often decisions on issues that matter to young people are made in office boardrooms by people in suits, which doesn't exactly reflect reality!
Our Campaigns for 2011:
Mosques and Young People:
There are hundreds of Mosques up and down the UK. However, while many do faciliate programmes and activites for young Muslims, by and large, these are limited. Mosques should form the hub of the Muslim community and in particlur for young Muslims. We want to campaign to ensure that all Mosques take adequate notice of the need to faciliate for the youth, address issues of concern, initiate more programmes and activites and ensure there is adequate representation of young Muslims on Mosque Management Committees' regardless of who small or big a Mosque is. We will work closely with the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB) to champion our causes.
Disability:
Contrary to popular perception in the community, disability amongst the young Muslim population is quite common. Working with the first Muslim Disability Commissioner in the UK, Haji Sagir Alam OBE who currently works for the Equality and Human Rights Commission, we want to champion the issues that concern young disabled Muslims.
Islamophobia:
Since 9/11 and 7/7 sadly Islamophobia is constantly increasing in the UK, but also in Europe where the recent ban of Minarets in Mosques has caused unease and considerable worry for Muslims. We want to make sure that young Muslims are not easy prey to those who wish to provoke reaction. The Muslim Council of Britain will fight along with other faith groups and civic society bodies and politicans from all political parties to represent the voices and concerns of this growing phenomenon in the UK and Europe.
Child Poverty:
Child Poverty is unacceptable in the 21st Centuary. We will campaign to ensure that the Government stick to their pledge to eradicate Child Poverty in the UK and invest more in tackling such issues which can lead to underachievement, isloation and eventually extremism within the Muslim community.
Climate Change:
Climate Change affects all of us. From the poorest to the richest nations and individuals in the world. Islam says plenty about protecting the environment as with many other faith groups. We will work with all concerned to represent the Muslim voice on climate change and the need to protect the future of our planet.
