Shelter launches Million Children Campaign to end bad housing for Children
Mon 24 May 2004
"I'm 13 and I've stayed in ten houses, about six or seven bed and
breakfasts, about five temporary houses. That's 21 times all-together
that I've moved"
13 year old Glasgow.
Shelter has recently unveiled the biggest campaign in its history aimed
at ending the devastating impact of the housing crisis on over a million
children in Britain. Bad housing wrecks lives.

We are the fourth richest country in the world, and yet millions of
people in Britain wake up every day in housing that is run-down,
overcrowded or dangerous. Many others have lost their homes altogether.
Bad housing robs us of security, health, and a fair chance in life.

Shelter believes a decent, warm safe home should be the right of every
child in this country

The campaign is being launched with the publication of Toying with
their future, a major expose which reveals for the first time that over
a million children who are growing up in overcrowded, unfit or emergency
housing, suffer from serious health problems, poor education and have
their future blighted.

Amongst its key facts are that one in 12 children in Britain are more
likely to develop diseases such as bronchitis, TB or asthma because of
bad housing and children who are homeless lose out on a quarter of
their schooling .

Shelter is now calling on the Government and the devolved
administrations to commit to ending bad housing for the next generation
of children. To achieve that aim, Shelter is launching its 'Million
Children Campaign'[.

Adam Sampson, Director of Shelter said:
"There is a hidden housing crisis in Britain and over a million
children are suffering the devastating consequences on their health,
their education and their chances in life. It is time for housing to be
put back up the political agenda along with education and health, where
it belongs. That's why in launching the Million Children Campaign
Shelter is calling on the public to support, and Government to commit,
to ending bad housing for the next generation of children."

It is a national scandal that one million children are growing up in
bad housing. Do you want to live in a country where one million children
suffer in bad housing? If you think it is a scandal to let one million
children suffer in this way you need to take a stand.

Become a Shelter campaigner and fight to build a better future for our
children.
