| MCB Seminar: A Guide To The British Media Thu 05 Aug 2004 |
At a time when British Muslims are facing unprecedented media pressure, the Muslim Council of Britain's Media Committee is organising a special one-day seminar on 'A Guide To The British Media' at the gleaming new London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel, London, on Saturday 25th September 2004.
The seminar's aim is to develop the skills needed by British Muslims to ensure a better and more accurate representation of their faith and values in the print and broadcast media.
This one day seminar will, God Willing, prove beneficial for all British Muslims who want to know more about how the UK media operates and want to combat the Islamophobia that runs rampant through much of the British media.
Attendees will be given the opportunity to question a panel of senior journalists from The Times, The Guardian, the Independent on Sunday and the Ilford Recorder to gain a deeper understanding of how our national and local newspapers work. There will be separate sessions with representatives of the Press Complaints Commission and OFCOM to find out about how complaints procedures work with respect to our newspapers and broadcasters.
In the age of the Internet, we will have the editor of BBC News Interactive on hand to give an overview of BBC News Online - the world's most popular news website.
Professor Greg Philo, co-author of the acclaimed book 'Bad News From Israel' will deliver a presentation - with accompanying video footage - of how our TV News broadcasters have failed to cover the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fairly and have tended to support official 'Israeli perspectives' about the long-running Middle East tragedy.
There will also be the opportunity to discuss the coverage of Islam with a panel of editors of various UK Muslim publications.
