The Muslim Council of Britain is disturbed to hear of the horrific attack on a pregnant woman which resulted in the loss of her baby. The 34-year-old woman, who has been described as of Middle Eastern appearance and wearing a headscarf, was shopping in a branch of the Co-op in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, when she was approached by a man who made racial remarks at her. The man followed her and a man to the car park when he launched an attack on the man who suffered from head injuries and then kicked the pregnant Muslim woman in her stomach.

This has happened just days after a British Muslim woman’s hijab was set on fire in a New York Street.

Harun Khan, Secretary General of the MCB said, “As a father of three young daughters, I am completely shocked and saddened to hear of such a horrific and cowardly attack on a vulnerable woman in our society today . My thoughts and prayers are with both the victims, especially for the lady who has now just lost a child as a result of hatred and xenophobia.”

“We need strong action now from the authorities to show that they are taking all hate crimes seriously, including Islamophobia, which findings show has increased in recent times, especially post Brexit”.

The Muslim Council of Britain recently welcomed the Home Secretary’s announcement of the Hate Crime Action Plan in July, which we hope will be a useful method to collate information on hate crimes. The MCB is currently submitting a response to the Home Affairs Committee inquiry into ‘Hate Crime and its violent consequences’. Harun Khan said, “We hope that these responses will help to formulate an effective strategy to tackle hate crime”.
