Building Community Alliances
The 'Building Community alliances' joint-event of the TUC Organising Academy and the MCB brought together representatives from unions and London mosques.
Attendees included Omer Ahmed, Head of Migrant Workers Support Unit, Transport and General Workers' Union; Luke Primarolo and Sarah Holden of Unite/Amicus; Pav Akhtar and Bev Miller of Unison; Darren Waplington of the TUC Vulnerable Workers Project and Mike Smith from the TUC General Secretary's office. Mosques representatives and MCB attendees were Faisal Dilmi, Youth Project Officer at the North London Central Mosque; Shaynul Khan, London Muslim Centre; Ibrahim, Al Huda Centre; Inam ul Haq, Brownlow Road Mosque, Salman Al-Azami of the MCB Mosques 100 Project and Jamil Sherif . Dr Bari, MCB Secretary General, participated in the day's closing session.
The workshop was structured around presentations and also three group activities a brainstorming session to identify shared values and objectives, an analysis of 'strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats' relating to the capacity of trade unions and local mosques to build alliances, and a discussion on practical steps for the future.
