CALL FOR CANDIDATES
Election of the
Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General
2014 - 2016
On Sunday 15 June 2014, delegates representing MCB’s
national, regional and local affiliates will assemble in London for the
Seventeenth Annual General Meeting.
In the course of the day, delegates will cast their votes
for the election of a Secretary General (SG), Deputy Secretary General (DSG)
and 28 members of the National Council (NC) for the term 2014-2016.
At previous AGMs, the SG and DSG were elected from within
the National Council (previously known as the Central Working Committee), after
the NC members had been elected/appointed by the General Assembly. This year all
delegates present will vote directly for the SG and DSG.
By this date each prospective candidate should also provide
of British citizenship or indefinite leave of stay
‘manifesto’ of up to 750 words outlining their experience of service in Muslim
community institutions, why they consider themselves suitable for the position
of SG (or DSG) and their assessment of the challenges facing Muslims in
Subject to receipt of this information I will announce the
candidates eligible to stand by 1st May 2014 and their manifestos
will be published on the MCB website.
Additionally I will require candidates to furnish me, ten
days before the AGM date, with evidence from a Disclosure & Barring
Service (DBS) check. Discharged bankrupts are also disqualified.
Candidates must also be an MCB affiliate’s delegate and
should have been nominated to the NC for election as a nationally elected
member.The elected SG and DSG will
automatically be members of the NC.

SCHEDULE FOR ELECTION-RELATED PROCESSES FOR AGM
MCB office will dispatch to all affiliates their delegate forms and reminders
for late payments of affiliation fees.
Election Commissioner, Judge Khurshid Drabu, CBE, will issue call for
candidates for Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General (SG/DSG) posts
End date for return of delegate forms and affiliation fees settlement (voting
delegates only accepted from paid-up affiliates)
End date for SG/DSG aspirants to send in their manifestos and other details
required by the Election Commissioner.
Election Commissioner will dispatch the ‘List of Approved Delegates' to each
delegate with nomination forms for national/zonal National Council candidates
date for return of nomination forms of national/zonal National Council
Announcement of SG/DSG candidates
15th June: MCB AGM – Delegates will
elect the new SG and DSG and subsequently members of the National Council
Muslim Council of Britain will be holding its 17th Annual General
Meeting on Sunday 15th June 2014, in London. Delegates from the range of
Muslim civil society will be assembling from across Britain to elect a
new National Council, and also office-bearers for the 2014-2016 term.
occasion will mark the conclusion of Farooq Murad's tenure as Secretary
General, having served 4 years as the head of the Muslim Council. He
has been unassuming, dedicated and has given invaluable time to serve
for the interests of Muslims in Britain, and the MCB will continue to
value his wise counsel.
Appointment of Election Commissioner
Khurshid Drabu CBE, has been appointed as the Election Commissioner to
conduct the election at the 2014 AGM. This election process will be
different from the past as candidates for the Secretary General and
Deputy Secretary General posts will have to declare their candidacy well
in advance and campaign to secure votes of affiliate delegates for that
session during the AGM.
