| Remembering the Tsunami Victims

| Let us also on this blessed day remember the victims of this tragedy, not only those who died, but also those who have lost loved ones, in our prayers. For there is so much healing that is needed healing that can ultimately only be found through the awesome power of prayer |
When natural disasters strike it is always difficult to explain why and the Tsunami has taken this question to the extremes of understanding. The worst earthquake witnessed for over 40 years has left in its aftermath indescribable suffering.
So what can we learn from this destruction? I for one have certainly been reminded of the awesome power of God. No matter how technologically advanced we become for sure God is always at least a few steps ahead.
We recently visited and, perhaps rather foolishly, attempted to climb Ben Nevis in fairly adverse weather conditions: there was an 80mph wind at the summit! I have visited the Ben many times and have always found myself looking at this beautiful mountain standing so serenely and have been reminded of God who created such a thing. This visit I felt somewhat differently as I gazed at the magnificent Ben, shortly after the advent of the Tsunami. In a strange way I almost felt frightened of this inanimate object, towering above me which in some way represented a manifestation of the power of its Creator. Needless to say, I only got half way up when the gale force winds left me with no alternative but to make a hasty (though careful) retreat.
How can we help? Today a number of mosques throughout Britain will be making a special appeal following the Friday prayers and this represents an important opportunity to dig deep into our pockets to help those who have lost so much, those who are left with nothing and those who need help to rebuild their shattered lives.
Encouragingly, The Federation of Students Islamic Societies in the UK & Eire (FOSIS), have also announced that today is a national collection day with all Islamic societies uniting to raise a targeted £50,000. Sulaiman Moolla the FOSIS Fundraising Manager said,
`The Tsunami has caused pure and utter devastation. We hope that by uniting all Islamic Societies on the 7th of January, collectively we are able to make a real contribution, ease the suffering of the victims and truly make a change.'
