MCB Leadership Development Programme: Investing in our Future
Mon 23 Aug 2004
'This is an excellent initiative, run by experts and providing an ideal opportunity to learn about and develop essential skills that our community sorely needs. This is the best leadership course that I have ever attended – and I've been on a fair few!'

Following the success of the MCB's first Leadership Development Programme which concluded in May of this year, a further programme has been planned.
The primary aim of this programme is to develop leadership capacity across the British Muslim community.

As an umbrella body for British Muslims, the MCB aims to enable the Muslim community to realise its full potential by participating in and contributing to mainstream society. This capacity building programme is an important initiative towards achieving this goal.

British Muslims have a much poorer than average socio-economic profile. Large numbers live in very deprived areas. They are poorly employed, and their housing conditions, general health and educational attainments are considerably below the national average. The proportion of Muslims in the prison population is thrice their number in the national population.

These disadvantages lead to alienation and social exclusion. We need to develop strategies and action plans to change this disturbing reality and to enable us to realise the full potential of British Muslims. We also need to increase both our human resources and leadership capacities to tackle this agenda. This exciting initiative aims to develop the type of leadership that will enable the Muslim community in Britain to develop strategies to reverse the downward spiral of our community.

The programme last year proved to be hugely successful. Comments from course participants reflected on the quality of teaching, opportunities for networking and above all the opportunities for personal growth:

'This is an excellent initiative, run by experts and providing an ideal opportunity to learn about and develop essential skills that our community sorely needs. This is the best leadership course that I have ever attended – and I've been on a fair few!'

'This course will open your eyes to the excellent skills base and the quality of people that exist within the Muslim community of the UK.'

'We were a diverse range of Muslims, we had to grapple with each other as well as ourselves – this has given me a greater appreciation of the value of diversity in the Muslim community.'

'…challenging, stretching and enriching.'

This years programme has been modified on the basis of critical evaluation from last years participants and we hope, God Willing, will prove to be equally, if not more, beneficial to participants and through so doing our wider community.
