For the past three months, I have been involved with Changemakers Foundation www.changemakers.org.uk. It was founded in 1994 by a coalition of educationalists and NGOs and was an early champion of young people leading their own social action and change.
This exciting, new opportunity was given to me by The Muslim Council of Britain www.mcb.org.uk and in conjunction with Changemakers which instilled in me various skills for me to thrive in the 21st Century. I acquired many new skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork skills. I believe that these skills are paramount to an individual's success and this role has enabled me to appreciate ones responsibility in the advancement of the greater community.
The application process was daunting at first but it soon became an experience to remember. The two steps were firstly, the application form itself followed by the nerve-racking interview. Following the acceptance; I was assigned a 'champion' to advise and guide me throughout the project. The priceless guidance which was given to me by my champion, Ruhana Ali, enabled me to complete the project successfully.
From the conception of the project I was unable to decide on an idea to focus on. However, after some deep thinking and discussing, I decided on the following idea. A day filled with fun and laughter while acquiring new skills for the betterment of one's physical and mental well being. The 'Activity day' consisted of three different sessions on the morning of 13th August. The session included yoga, health and beauty tips and public speaking. These sessions were highly appreciated and were thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees.
The taster yoga session was to promote and highlight the advantages of yoga such as increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons, complete detoxification and excellent toning of the muscles. The health and beauty tips session was to appreciate one's self and realise the need of constant care of one's skin and hair. Finally, the public speaking workshop was practical in explaining the key concepts and trade secrets for a successful and an exciting speaker. All the attendees were given a chance to speak publicly and were given constructive feedback on their performance.
Allhumdulliah by the grace of Allah (SWT) the event ran smoothly and successfully. I would also like to give my appreciation and thanks to: Mr. Syed Farrukh Hassan (MCB), Ms. S. Aston (Changemakers), Ms. Arzoo (Yoga), Ms. Shazia (Health and beauty tips), Miss Ruhana Ali (Public speaking) and to my family for their relentless and continuous support.
