There has been much media speculation in the run up to the local and European elections as to how Britain's 1.6 million Muslims will vote. Within the Muslim community political discussions are far more common place than ever before. Many Muslim organisations have provided guidelines to the community as to who to support in the elections.

It is not the role of the MCB to recommend a particular political party you should vote for. However, it is our duty to keep the community informed and aware about the dangers that threaten it from staying away from the polls and not participating. Last week the MCB sent an urgent letter to all of the country's mosques, Islamic associations and institutions urging them to encourage their communities to take the fullest part in the upcoming local and European elections. Their participation is very important in order not to let in the racist and Far Right parties simply by default which could happen if people do not vote and there is a low turnout. This is the opportunity to support parties which have Muslim friendly policies. Now is the time to take action by voting – use the opportunity, don't lose it.
