The issue of world hunger is both real and worrying. More than one-seventh of the world's population are starving and millions die every year because of lack of food or inadequate nutrition. How can this problem be dealt with? Where do genetically modified (GM) foods fit in? Could they be of value? Some say that GM foods can indeed benefit poorer countries and can help alleviate hunger. Yet, there are others who believe that GM foods are a serious threat to the livelihood of the poor and will undermine their ability to feed themselves. Who is right?

 

 

Over the last few years, Muslims have begun to realise the value of understanding and constructively engaging in important issues in the world. We have begun to appreciate that by participating in discussions and political processes we can both learn and contribute positively to society. Important issues such as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have especially pulled Muslims into the spotlight and we have had to tap into the potential that we always knew we had. Yet, whilst confronting these issues, it is becoming clear to many that we are intricately linked to others; and that a deeper understanding of the problems of the world can help in finding more effective, common solutions.

 

 

World hunger, mass poverty, scarcity of resources, corporate greed and increasing environmental degradation are, unfortunately, a reality. Dealing with these issues is part of being a Muslim and at present we, as a community are failing to address them with the importance they deserve. With this is mind The Islamic Foundation for Ecology & Environmental Sciences (IFEES) & the City Circle have jointly organised a debate and discussion on World Hunger: Is GM the Solution? (Details below). This event is a unique opportunity to participate in a debate, in which some of these issues will be discussed. Different views will be heard and the audience will have the chance to ask questions. It promises to be a lively and informative evening and is open to everyone.

 

 

Following the debate, there will also be an opportunity to hear about the work of IFEES, and to find out how to link up with other Muslims concerned with environmental issues. We hope to see you there!
