Dudley's Radio Ramadan Promotes Services To The Muslim Community
`We are always looking for new ways to reach people in our community with information about the services we provide.'
Linda Warren, Director of Social Services
It seems as though the communal spirit of this month has embraced not only the hearts of local Muslim communities, but entire cities as well! An innovative radio campaign has been launched in Dudley during the month of Ramadan to promote health and social services to the Muslim community.

Staff members from Dudley Social Services and Dudley Public Health have worked with Radio Ramadan Dudley to produce a series of radio slots to be broadcast in the English, Mirpuri and Urdu languages. Also featured will be radio interviews with staff from health and social services, and listeners will be able to engage in various question and answer sessions.

The campaign will promote a variety of services, which include assistance for both adults and children with disabilities, and encouraging proactive engagement such as the 'Exercise for Health' and 'Stop Smoking' programmes. Mosques in the area are also getting involved by promoting this work to their local communities.

Radio Ramadan Dudley is one of 33 community radio stations set up across the country to broadcast to Muslim communities during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Linda Warren, Director of Social Services, said, `We are always looking for new ways to reach people in our community with information about the services we provide. Many families from the Muslim community lack awareness of the range of services on offer due to language and other barriers so I'm hopeful that this campaign will help to bridge that information gap.'

Dr Akbar Mohamedali, Treasurer of the Muslim Council of Britain, commented: `Almost 40% of Dudley's black and ethnic minority population is Muslim. Dudley Council's partnership with Radio Ramadan is an excellent step towards responding to the needs of this community."

Radio Ramadan community radio stations rely on advertising and sponsorship to finance the month long broadcast and are run by volunteers. The latest installation in Dudley aims to offer a refreshing variety of listening to an already colourful array of broadcast programmes in the city. The station broadcasts at frequency 87.8 FM
