The Muslim Council of Britain is deeply saddened by the widespread destruction and huge loss of human life caused by the massive earthquake in India's north-western state of Gujarat.
"Earthquakes are an immense test from God, and must be endured with patience and fortitude. The Qur'an teaches us: 'To God we belong, and to Him is our return.' All our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Gujarat," said the MCB Secretary General, Mr Yousuf Bhailok.
Hundreds of thousands of British Muslims originate from and have continuing family ties in Gujarat.
Two of the MCB's affiliate organisations, Muslim Aid and Islamic Relief, have already sent emergency aid to the area and the MCB has called on all British Muslims to help in this tragedy. The Muslim Doctors and Dentists Association (MDDA) and the Doctors for Global Relief have also linked up with organisations in India to supply mobile clinics and other medical facilities.
The MCB has also sent a letter of condolence to the Indian High Commission in London expressing sympathy for the victims of the earthquake.
