MCB presents ‘Eid in the Square’

The first ever celebration of Eid ul-Fitr in Trafalgar Square, organised by the Muslim Council of Britain and the Mayor of London, will take place on Saturday 28 October.

Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting observed by Muslims around the world, and is one of two festivals celebrated in the Muslim calendar.
‘‘The Muslim Council of Britain is delighted to be working with the Mayor of London in welcoming Londoners from all backgrounds to the ‘Eid in the Square’ event. I hope Muslims and non-Muslims in the capital and beyond will come to take part in the festivities that have been organised for the day. I hope too that the event will foster better relations between the various communities that live in London through understanding and exposure to a Muslim festival and Muslim customs’, said Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari, MCB Secretary-General.
Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, said: 'Eid ul-fitr is the most auspicious day of the Muslim calendar. It is a day of great joy and serves as a reminder to people of all faiths of the importance of peace, compassion, unity and charity. London's Muslim communities continue to make a major contribution to London's success as a great world city. It is therefore fitting that this year's Eid celebrations, will, for the first time, take place in Trafalgar Square.

The event will include live entertainment, a street bazaar, exhibitions and displays about Islam. It is free and open to all Londoners and will run from 1.00 – 5.00pm. Further details are available on the MCB website, www.mcb.org.uk and www.london.gov.uk. The event will also be streamed live on the internet via the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2006/10/24/eid_inthesquare_feature.shtml
