On behalf of the Muslim Council of Britain, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all for a peaceful and blessed month of Ramadan.

For the next month, many British Muslims will be fasting from Dawn to Sunset, though abstaining from food and drink, Muslims will fulfil themselves spiritually and find their renewal of purpose.

Ramadan is a month of devotion to prayers, patience, reflection and charity. It is also a great time for interfaith work and sharing our best practices with those not of the Muslim faith. In keeping with our project on Visit My Mosque day, we hope mosques up and down the country will participate in opening their doors to the general public and share the spirit of Ramadan with neighbours and friends. Many mosques already have outreach initiatives in place, with many already setting up food banks for the homeless.

As a retired doctor, healthcare during Ramadan is very important to me. As fasting this year will be around 19 hours long, I urge for everyone who is fasting to drink plenty of water between Iftar (time of breaking fast) and Suhoor (pre-dawn meal). It is important for us to be responsible in the way we fast and take care of our bodies.

The Muslim Council of Britain has developed many factsheets for Ramadan, including guidance for diabetic patients who wish to fast, which are accessible on our Ramadan page. I hope everyone will make use of these factsheets which provide useful information, as well as guidance on recommended food to have during Iftar and Suhoor, provided by a Dietician.

I hope you all have a blessed and productive Ramadan, and hope you remember the MCB in your prayers.

Ramadan Mubarak.
