There are some 1.5 million Muslims in Britain. Many will be observing the fast from dawn until sunset. Many will end the day with a meal before going off to the Mosque for evening prayers.
Ramadan now falls in summer, with daily fasting hours being as long as 18 hours.
This year, we are delighted that many mainstream bodies are acknowledging and celebrating the British Muslim experience.
Ramadan on TV
Channel 4 became the first terrestial broadcaster to showcase the British Muslim experience during Ramadan. The channel aired a variety of programmes including 'A Very British Ramadan', and each morning, the broadcaster became the first mainstream media outlet to air the adhan during the morning 'suhur'.
Twenty years ago there were no Muslims in the Premier League. Now there are nearly forty - enough for three football teams. To mark the start of Ramadan this programme, narrated by Colin Murray, speaks to star players and top managers to find out what impact Muslims are having on the English game.
