05 December 2003
Assalamualaikum,

Sir, I would like to draw your attention to the portrayal of Muslims in the media generally and to the way Mr. Sadat Badat is being constantly referred to in the media as a 'British Muslim'. The words 'British Muslim' appeared in the 'Metro' (free daily newspaper issued in the London area) on Friday 5 December 2003 and in Channel 4's news broadcast last night (4 December 2003).

Sir, I believe that whatever a person does is his or her own business and they should be subject to the law of the land. The portrayal of a person charged with a crime linked to terrorism as a Muslim misleads the public into thinking that this phenomenon is limited to Muslims only and is somehow a result of the religion of that particular person. The media, I believe, should not use religious tags to identify British people.

If the media insists on using the words British Muslim, then I would recommend that they use the words 'British Christian' with every murderer, rapist and peadophile with every person of that faith who is accused of those abhorrent crimes.

I am sure you will take this up with the newspaper and television station involved as part of your normal effort against the inaccurate portrayal of the people of Islamic faith in Britain.

Dear MCB,

The Muslim Council of Britain insists that the Foreign Office Minister, Denis MacShane apologises for calling on British Muslims to choose between the "British way" of political dialogue and non-violence and the "way of the terrorists". What is wrong with that?

I see no reason why the Muslim Council of Britain or Muslims in general should find this offensive. It seems to me that you already comply with the "British way" in that you are opposed to terrorism. You have chosen the "British way".

In response you state "British Muslims have consistently condemned all forms of terrorism and indiscriminate slaughter, whether perpetrated by individuals, groups or states.” This may generally be true but is is clearly not the case for all British Muslims. Richard Reid is a British Muslim and he nearly brought down a passenger jet. Recently there has been an arrest of a British Muslim in possesion of explosives. Surely you must be aware of other examples of British Muslims involved in terrorist plots.

You should face up to the fact that a proportion of your community supports the "way of the terrorists". I see no conflict between the MCB view on terrorism and Denis Macshane's. To say that he implied British Muslims sympathise with terrorist actions is an over-reaction and it would be more helpful to support him, because you claim to be opposed to terrorism.

Yours sincerely

To follow on about the Red Cross banning Christmas decorations in their shops (they help muslims abroad) because the decorations offend minotity groups such as yourselves; It is with further disappointment that I read more reports about office groups banning the word Christmas when sending cards to receipents including muslims. The words 'Seasons Greetings' have been substituted instead. To follow that policy, a library in High Wycombe has banned artifacts symbolising Christmas because it offends muslims. (The place was linked to a celebration marking end of ramadan recently)
If muslims find Christmas so offensive - why do they make this country their home?
Yours disappointingly

I am embarrassed and ashamed about some of the nasty comments made about Muslims on this website by some people.
If those people haven't got the inteligence to argue their point properly and politely then they shouldn't bother saying anything. However i do agree with many non muslims who have wrote in saying they don't hear enough from Muslims or the MCB about condemming attacks from suicide bombers who claim to be supporting islam.
What do you honestly expect? Islam has come under close scrutiny recently and whilst i feel it is a very beautiful religion is it any wonder that people are concerned when what is going on around them when attacks of this nature are being declared to be in the name of Allah. Whilst it is racist to think every Muslim person is a terrorist it is also racist to think that everyone who speaks out in opposition of Islam is a white christian racist. Why does the MCB constantly outcry when an islamic muslim person is arrested for terrorist offences in the UK? Maybe it thinks the police are full of white racist christians? Its seemsthat if the police arrest anyone muslim they are being racist. That in itself is a racist outlook. Does the Islamic faith not want the people of the uK and by that I mean sikhs, jews, muslims, christians, hindus, budhists, athiasts, agnostics, black, brown, white to feel safe in their own country? WSHy should we all be subjected to terror (afterall a muslim person could be injured or even killed as a result of a terrorist attack by islamic terrorists)
Whilst I accept that IRA terrorists or Protestanat loyalist terorists are labelled as being Christian Terrorists I must point out the amount of terrorism around the world attributed to christainity or any other religon is pretty low compared with recent bursts of islamic terrorism world wide. instead of complaining about how hard done to you are why not channel this energy into something positive like promoting your lovely religon in the community to help better understanding between multi faith communities. Come on prove this racist idiots wrong! Show them what lovely people you are.
I also would point out that its not just white chrisitians or for that mater atheasts whom can be racist i've heard sikhs, hindus jews rastas , and buddhist all make unsavoury comments about your religon. This is not a chrisitianity versus islamic issue. Its Islam proving itself to the world I feel intimidated when walking through predominantley muslim area near where i live. no one says thank you if you hold open a door (and I mean no -one) no one moves out of the way to let you through on a crowded pavement. All this adds to a general feeling that the muslim community wouldn't tolerate me as a white man.
I know that isn't true because i know what your religion and community spirit is like. But others who don't know then perhaps a more friendlier atmosphere would be much better to promote harmony.
Smiling instead of staring is a good way to build bridges and promote better relations. One muslim man walked out into the street whilst i was driving stopped in front of the car and just stared at me. SO the nastinness can work both Communities need to talk to each other and promote peacuful harmonious living because if something doesn't happen soon there will be major major problems in this country. There will be violence and rioting and i think everypone fears that at the moment Peace and Best WIshes to you and your friends
