In response to Kilroy's statement that "Arab countries put together
export less
than Finland", total exports of the Arab world in 2000 - including oil -
were
$243 billion whilst Finland's exports in 2002, including oil : $40.1
billion.
Mr. Kilroy-Silk obviously isn't familiar with another Arab invention,
which is
MATHEMATICS.
Speaking of which, here is a list of useful Arab inventions :
The number 0
Mathematics (Algebra)
Telescope
Pendulum
Compass
Kebabs
Gun and gunpowder
Photography
Paper
Soap
Windmills
Glasses (specs)

I have been following the recent events related to what Kilroy has said in
his most recent column in the Sunday Express and have just read the news
the
the BBC are to suspend his day time morning programme as of this moment.
But I feel, having read your letters to the parties concerned that you do
not target the Express group newspaper enough.
Granted the man that wrote these words is the main culprit of hate and you
can defend his right to free speech any time of day or night. But surely
the Suday Express as the responsibilty to review and a columnists words to
fit into press guidelines.
From your letter to the Express I read that you have asked for the right
to
reply, which I hope they duely grant. But I feel this is a sad indictment
of the way the press and media is heading in this day and age, when opinion
and half-truths are touted as news instead of real, fact based journalism.
Even more sad is the people who pay their money to read this tripe and
believe it to be the truth, even worst still, that they act upon it.
I am lost for ideas as to what reparations the express group can give to
Muslims, and I am not fully aware if they have apologised for Kilroy's
article of the 4th of January, which in my mind is only a small step to
reparing the damage that could have been caused by pieces like this.
Sadly this type of self-obsessed, self-serving bile is what sells in this
country, but more worryingly it is sometimes not reserved for columns
alone,
but finds its way into the reporting of actual world events.
With regards,

Whilst his statement was a rather insulting generalisation about Arabs and Arab states it did contain within it some grains of truth. We live in a democracy (unlike any Islamic country) and people are entitled to their views however unpopular these may be.
In Britain we seem to "tolerate" Muslim extremists who enjoy the benefits of this country whilst seeking to undermine it. These are the first people to take full advantage of free speech and accuse others of racism.
There is a tendency within Muslim communities to 'rally around' fellow Muslims regardless. Recently there was a lot of community criticism of the police and media handling of the arrests in Gloucester despite the facts that a man was charged with possessing explosives with intent to endanger life. I recall on September 12th, a day after the terrorist outrage, how a Muslim work colleague belittled the minutes silence as a mark of respect. In Newham, East London, a few Muslims even celebrated.
I hope that your organisation is interested in promoting genuine (two-way) integration and inter-faith working and recognises that much more can be done by Muslims themselves to practice the tolerance that is so expected of others. Tolerance too, perhaps, on a personal level for a female work colleague of mine who is being forced into an arranged marriage against her will.
I would welcome this post being included on your website because it is certainly a view which many would sympathise with.
yours respectfully

Dear MCB people:
I have surfed the net to try and find out what Kilroy-Silk actually SAID to
prompt such a row. Eventually, after visiting the sites of the BBC,
Guardian, Independent, CRE, etc. I began to think I was searching in vain.
How can I assess Kilroy's views when all I can read is reports about his
views rather than Kilroy in his own words?
So, my thanks to you for providing the full text of his column as an
appendix to your letter to Ms Lorraine Heggessey, Controller of BBC One.
(http://www.mcb.org.uk/letter60.html) At least it gave me the chance to
consider his words and not just the answers he provoked. I couldn't find
the text anywhere else - not even on the Express website, and they are
"standing by their man".
Having read Kilroy's words, I must say I agreed with the tone and content
of your response. Kilroy is too sweeping in his condemnation of "Arabs" and
takes no care to distinguish the actions of states from the views of
individuals. I am also alarmed by his assumption that the proper attitude
of Islam should be "to go down on their knees and thank God for the
munificence of the US" for the benefits of science, medicine, etc. Whilst
I am not anti-American, I think their "munificence" is a much more mixed
blessing than Kilroy would have us believe.
I expect that, over the next few weeks, he will be portrayed increasingly
as a victim of political correctness rather than as an inconsiderate and
shallow loud-mouth. However, just as there are many in Islam who should
not
be lumped together with suicide bombers, there are many in Christendom who
find the attitudes and language of Kilroy repulsive.
I hope MCB will continue to make measured responses like your letter to Ms
Heggessey.

Lighten up on Kilroy boys. Otherwise you might come across as a little obsessed.

Dear Sirs,
Whilst I disagree with the way Kilroy's has come across, I'm incredibly
angry with the way the Muslim representatives have tried to gag free
speech.
The article brings up issues that are of the upmost importance to arabs
and
the muslim community. In recent years Arabs have tumbled into a moral
abyss
and the lack of strong criticism of terrorism and suicide bombing angers
many British people. Instead of constantly blaming others the muslim
community needs to have a look at itself and where its going. Maybe your
representative don't understand, but I think in the end this sort of
controversy is really lighting a match under middle England and will cause
British muslims a lot of problems in the future.
