I write to condemn the outrageous behaviour of those mindless individuals who are currently venting their anger, frustration and feelings on the Muslim population of the UK.
Can I apologise on their behalf - it is at times like this when all freedom loving people must join together and condemn acts of violence whenever and wherever they are committed. This of course includes acts of violence against Arabs in Palestine and it is to be hoped that America will now wake up to the need to reassess their foreign policy including the Middle East - clearly at the root of the current problems. This communication of course in no way should be taken as in any way condoning the appalling act of terrorism perpetrated in the US this week.

Rest assured that the vast majority of the right and traditionally fair minded people of Britain defend your rights to live, work and practise your chosen faith here in the free and democratic society our fathers fought to defend.

I, like many others, have been watching the news since Tuesday with disbelief. I find it hard to believe that anyone could hate another group of people so much that they would want to cause them such harm.

But I have also watch in disbelief when I see reports of Muslims and Sikhs being targeted by people in this country and all over the world, not because of who they are but because of their religious beliefs. When schools have to be closed because of death threats, when individuals are spat at in the street I start to lose faith in what is supposed to modern nation.

I am not a religious man, but have been warmed to see Jews, Christians, Muslims and other religions coming together to worship, and without wanting to sound condescending, I wanted to offer my moral support in a time when hate seems to be growing from some quarters, while compassion can be a little thin on the ground.

Muslims have been forced into a difficult position since Tuesday, and as a journalist I find true journalist values being sacrificed in exchange for sensasionalisation and tabloid values. I don't represent journalists, but I do have morals, and believe that any kind of action carried out in hate is disgusting.

So that is why I have got in touch. Because while I hear of such emails full of hate being sent to you, I hope to offer something positive in terms of support, and hope to break the monotony of negativity.

I am sure that we all stand together in hoping that these terrible acts will never happen again, and trust that finally the world will be able to put into some perspective the atrocities that take place the world over every day. I will finish here, but my thoughts are with every group of people misrepresented in this country who may be on the receiving end of hate.

I've just been watching GMTV reports of abuse being sent to you.

I am really sorry that non-muslims react like this, and myself as a white British person just want to strongly give you my support.

This horrible atrocity has been caused by a small group of people, and it is absolutely ridiculous to tar others just with the same brush, in the same way as all white Christians are not automatically held responsible for the actions of a few.

I do hope muslims all over the world receive the same respect we give to others and anyone who thinks otherwise is absolutely terrible. It really upsets me, and I wish you all, the very best.

I am an American, and I appreciate the heart felt grief you have expressed on your site, a sentiment that I am certain is shared by the vast majority of Islam. Thank you.

One thing concerns me, though, is that it seems Islam has closed in on itself here in the US. True Islam has never been a very vocal religion here in the US since the Iran crisis. I don't think Islamics are really keen on taking the spotlight in general. However, there are some truly evil people who claim the mantle of Islam who are also very vocal. If there are any members of the US Islamic community reading this, I would strongly urge you to have a press conference, write a letter to an ditor, contact your mayor, hold a benefit, do whatever it takes to let people know that you mean no harm to anyone. Be very, very vocal, speak from your heart and eventually perhaps the truth about Islam will crack prejudices.

My condolescences to you at the death of Muslims of whatever ethnic origin , who have been killed in the WTC. Does the Muslim faith allow the sacrifice of their people unknowlingly in the name of the Holy War? We do not know enough about the Islam.
