This is just a short note to ask for some advice. I am a christian living in Blackburn Lancashire and largely there have been pretty good community relations here for the last few years. Many Muslims live in the town and I have never had any bad experiences as a result of religious differences.

However, the recent tragedy in America has made me more acutely aware that I actually don't know any Muslims at all, other than the occasional business colleague.

I don't feel this lack of mixing is anyones fault but rather a consequence of people living side by side whilst pursuing their own lives and interests. When I look around at the hate that seems to exist around the world between different religious groups I am becoming concerned that we in this country might also be creating an atmosphere where people will grow apart rather than come together.

When I hear of separate Muslim schools and I hear the occasional Muslim cleric or spokesperson describing the western way of life as totally incompatible with Islamic life, I worry even more. I realize of course that it is my lack of exposure to local Islamic communities, in any meanigful way, that leaves me with an understanding gained only from the media.

I and many others I have spoken to would really like to mix more but just don't know how to. We would like to talk and discuss ideas in a social setting that would suit all involved. What do you advise?

I would like to express my revulsion on hearing of the attacks on Muslims in the wake of the attacks on New York and Washington. Please be assured that it is only a minority of people in this country who equate the word "terrorist" with "Muslim". My family and friends agree that these people are terrorists purely and simply, and we feel that they should be addressed as such. Please extend our sympathy to those who have become victims of these mindless acts of violence.

I just wanted to write to you in the wake of the WTC bombing to express my solidarity with the British Muslim and world Muslim community. I have read some of the e:mails on this site attacking you and it saddens me. I have read about Muslim people not wearing traditional dress for fear of attack and that saddens me. We cannot let the intolerance and madness of extremists of any kind come between the communities of the world. Vive La Differance and long live World Citizenship.

I would like to add my voice to those supporting Muslims at this time. I am appalled by the Islamaphobia that is going on.

I am an Anglican priest in Bury. We (myself and the two mosques in my parishes) have organzed joint prayers for peace tomorrow. We have also issued a joint statement condemning the events in New York but also seeking understanding as to the causes that lie behind these atrocities.

We are very concerned that members of the communities here could have to bear attacks and they may also have to watch their families and contacts in Afghanistan and Pakistan (and Iran) being placed under appalling threat.

We are rpaying that war may be averted. That we may live in respect for each other. That bridges may be built. In the name of Allah/God we have got to find a true friendship and fellowship of faiths.

I am a non-Muslim living in Nottingham who wishes to write and express support for the Muslim community in Britain. I have been shocked to hear that Muslims have been targets for ignorant attacks in Britain, as a result of the tragic events in the USA.

I simply wish to let you know that there are people out here in the UK who appreciate the cultural diversity of this country, and celebrate living in mixed faith community.

As a former teacher I was privileged to teach Muslim children and in turn learnt a lot about the generosity of spirit that Islam offers and creates. I wish you all well in the coming months and trust that others will do likewise.
