I am just emailing to say that I hope all the Muslim people here in the UK are safe; I hope there is no backlash and racism following the dreadful terrorist attack in America. By the way I am not Muslim, I am Roman Catholic. I don't know what else to say. Stay safe.

I am writing to thank you for so quickly and clearly stating your opposition to the terrible actions that were taken in America last week. I found this very encouraging.

As a lay preacher in my local church I also now have the task of calling on people to be disgusted at what as happened, and yet to be calm and forgiving in their response.

I am saddened to hear of reports of anger and even attacks targetted at Muslims. I sincerely hope they cease immediately: there is no place for such actions or mentality in the kingdom of God.

For all of us struggling to make sense of the past seven days, I find the words of Hannah's prayer recorded in the first book of Samuel, chapter 2, appropriate:

"There is no-one holy like the Lord, there is no-one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed."

I pray for peace in the world, and in our land. I pray that your members will also be able to know that peace.

As an English Doctor and amateur astronomer, I have friends from all Faiths, and would like to express my shame at the assaults and harassments directed against ordinary decent Muslims in the UK. To call every Muslim a terrorist is like calling every Christian a Nazi.

At a time when even MessrsYasser Arafat and Ariel Sharon are trying to lay down their arms in a ceasefire for further discussions, and possibly even work together against the extremists, it is all the more wrong for my fellow countrymen to victimise ordinary Muslims.

For what it is worth ( not much I agree) I apologise for my less understanding fellows. I am as angry as the next person about what has happened in the USA but see no future in a global "jihad" between East and West, nor yet in a situation in which Israel ends up playing the "Samson Card" due to enforced diplomatic isolation. We must not throw the baby out with the bathwater - particularly if the "baby" in question is the biosphere itself.

I have actually written articles for both Jewish and Arab magazines - on astronomical matters - and would hope that , in this vast Universe, we can one day look to what binds us together rather than what divides us - otherwise the fate of the dinosaurs and the trilobites surely awaits us all!

We have a great future in a magnificent Universe, if only we can come together and turn our rockets to their true role - the Exploration and Humanization of Space.

I felt compelled today to call your Offices and express my disgust at the disgraceful treatment that is being meted out to British citizens whose roots are in Asia, by the small minority of thugs and bully boys who are strangers to the notion of living in harmony. These people do not live in harmony with anyone. Today it is Muslims (or Hindus or Sikhs, because they can't tell the difference), tomorrow it will be citizens of the next nation against which England are playing soccer. They don't even live in harmony with themselves.

I am just an ordinary bloke who is not religious and I can assure you that the vast majority of people like me wish you no ill-will. Many of your people are suffering even worse insults and violence than usual and I want only to express my solidarity with you in these very tense times. It is little consolation, I know, that over the years to come, things will gradually get better. Improvement in race relations is incremental and in my observation, relationships have, on the whole, gradually improved over time in this country. I suppose we all have tribal instincts and the world over there are tensions between the tribes. We simply do not understand each other and there is a lot of mutual fear based solely on the fact that we look or sound different.

I wish I knew how we could rally together other Brits to express to you the goodwill they undoubtedly feel. If this violence was being perpetrated on horses or dogs, there would be half a million people from the Countryside Alliance marching down Whitehall on Sunday. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get, not a half a million Muslims marching in support of Muslims, but half a million others marching in support of Muslims!

I'm rambling on now so I'll stop. Please just accept my bit of moral support. New York was inexcusable. It was the work of disturbed minds, BUT IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT!

I hope all finally goes well for you. Keep your spirits up.
