I know [and like] three muslims so I know you're not all the same. However, as a community, you need to act reponsibly and get a firm grip of all of your extremists and radicals (refer here for one of the latest incidents involving unchecked youth:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1557000/1557154.stm ).

Except for the gay, liberal, chattering-classes, there are millions of English now who are getting to the end of their patience with certain aspects/members of your culture/community. Eventually, crackpot terrorist actions (and aggressive celebrations of such) will result in a very, very hard series of USA/English responses, both at home here and all over the middle east. Therefore, either go to Afghanistan or Pakistan [if you love them all so much] or get your houses in order and behave like the English that you claim to be.

Peace is where it's at

It is with great sadness that I read of the mindless verbal and physical attacks on Muslims, both in this country and in the rest of the world; people are too quick to point the finger of suspicion and blame at others and this is not at all helpful for anyone. All of us, of whatever religion or nationality, must bear some responsibility for what is happening in the world.

Therefore I just wanted to write letting you know that not all non-Muslim people (I am an attender at a Quaker meeting) are unfriendly toward you at this time of difficulty following the terrible terrorist attacks on the USA, and to offer you my support and prayers at this time.

If there is anything I can do to help please do let me know.

Yours in support and friendship,

It is with great sadness that I have heard of Muslim organisations which have been receiving threatening and abusive e-mails, I thought I should send a note to offer my support to you in these troubled times. The people who are perpetrating these acts are a minority, and a very ill-informed one at that. These people are only looking for trouble, as I am sure you know, it would not matter to them as to who they target as long as they can;

1) Feel they can justify their stupid behavior.
2) Attack a minority group.

I know that this e-mail will not change anything but it might reassure you that there are people out here that will not follow or support these racists.

Jonathan.

I find it difficult to comprehend the recent events, being fully aware that the Muslim communities in this country are as shocked and horrified as the rest of the population, and that it is not an act perpetrated in the name of Islam.

However, a fatois was issued against Salman Rushdie for the writing of a book. If the mastermind behind these attacks is found to be Osama Bin Laden, would it not be something for the Islamic nations and communities around the world to issue one against him ?

I deplore the anti-Muslim feelings that have come to light, and the attacks on innocent people of that faith in some countries, particularly the mini-cab driver in Twickenham and the gentleman in New York who was beaten just because the attacker thought he resembled Bin Laden.

If there is anything to learn from this atrocity, is it that we must all learn to live together, respect and tolerate other faiths, and move away from this selfish, insular, and destructive lifestyle.

Moslems have featured heavily in the media these last few days - "...the Americans have got their just deserts..." "...if you attack Afghanistan then you attack the Moslem faith. We will call a Jihad..." "...there are 3 million Moslems in Britain and we will rise up against you...". These being comments made right here in Britain.

There have also been voices raised (RIGHTLY) condemning the attacks on British Moslems (and Sikhs and, probably, Hindus).

What has been missing is a strong Moslem voice consistently speaking out against the attacks in the US AND (at the same time) against the terrorists AND (at the same time) against the threat of Jihad. I believe that the "anglo Saxon community" (as described on Radio 5 yesterday) needs to hear this rather than the anger being directed at the minority who will use this as an opportunity to have a go at the Asian community. I notice that the BNP have stayed remarkably quiet throughout. That is because the media and the Moslem spokespeople in the media (whether put forward or chosen) have done a far better job of stirring up racial ill feeling than they could ever have done.

I will be going to Arsenal today with my son (its his first match) and will walk past the Finsbury Park Mosque - whose leader has been heavily featured in the media. I have fear. Will WE be attacked, will the local pub be ttacked, will the ground itself be attacked. The Moslem walking towards us - man or bomb? I think I'll cross the road. Daft, yes but, I feel, understandable given some of the views expressed.

These are feelings I am uncomfortable with. When I see immigrants (of all creeds) trying to enter Britain clinging to the bottom of trains I think, let them in. Now I'm not so sure. When I see Asian, West Indian, Moslem and Sikh...etc working side by side with the "anglo saxons" I feel proud of our multi cultural society. Now I'm not so sure.

There have always been many doubters amongst the white community. Those who love an Onion Barji or a Kebab on a Friday night and who, of course, would never dream of joining the NF or BNP but who nevertheless espouse views which are undeniably but almost subtly racist. At the moment these people are feeling smug. They are hearing quotes of the 3 million Moslems in Britain and saying "we told you so". Please, please stand up against them not by threatening them or decrying the activity of the minority amongst them but by keeping your anger focussed, for now at least, on where it surely is deserved - the extremists within the Moslem community itself, both here and abroad.
