Moslems have featured heavily in the media these last few days - "...the
Americans have got their just deserts..." "...if you attack Afghanistan
then
you attack the Moslem faith. We will call a Jihad..." "...there are 3
million Moslems in Britain and we will rise up against you...". These
being
comments made right here in Britain.
There have also been voices raised (RIGHTLY) condemning the attacks on
British Moslems (and Sikhs and, probably, Hindus).
What has been missing is a strong Moslem voice consistently speaking out
against the attacks in the US AND (at the same time) against the
terrorists
AND (at the same time) against the threat of Jihad. I believe that the
"anglo Saxon community" (as described on Radio 5 yesterday) needs to hear
this rather than the anger being directed at the minority who will use
this
as an opportunity to have a go at the Asian community. I notice that the
BNP have stayed remarkably quiet throughout. That is because the media
and
the Moslem spokespeople in the media (whether put forward or chosen) have
done a far better job of stirring up racial ill feeling than they could
ever
have done.
I will be going to Arsenal today with my son (its his first match) and
will
walk past the Finsbury Park Mosque - whose leader has been heavily
featured
in the media. I have fear. Will WE be attacked, will the local pub be
ttacked, will the ground itself be attacked. The Moslem walking towards
us
- man or bomb? I think I'll cross the road. Daft, yes but, I feel,
understandable given some of the views expressed.
These are feelings I am uncomfortable with. When I see immigrants (of all
creeds) trying to enter Britain clinging to the bottom of trains I think,
let them in. Now I'm not so sure. When I see Asian, West Indian, Moslem
and Sikh...etc working side by side with the "anglo saxons" I feel proud
of
our multi cultural society. Now I'm not so sure.
There have always been many doubters amongst the white community. Those
who
love an Onion Barji or a Kebab on a Friday night and who, of course, would
never dream of joining the NF or BNP but who nevertheless espouse views
which are undeniably but almost subtly racist. At the moment these people
are feeling smug. They are hearing quotes of the 3 million Moslems in
Britain and saying "we told you so". Please, please stand up against them
not by threatening them or decrying the activity of the minority amongst
them but by keeping your anger focussed, for now at least, on where it
surely is deserved - the extremists within the Moslem community itself,
both
here and abroad.
