Comments & Enquiry: I have just read some of the comments sent to you in the aftermath of the US tragedy and many of them make me ashamed to be white and British.

Terrorists of whatever colour, creed or race should be found and punished. At the same time we should maybe deal likewise with the racists who peddle hatred and who are using this awful event to attack peaceful people.

Whatever spiritual leanings we have, we should all join together and show that good will defeat evil.

This is a letter I wish to send in love. I am British, but not a Muslim. I have, like most people, I'm sure, felt the genuine desire to do something useful in the light of this week's atrocities. But I am only one person, of no particular note, status or influence, and what can one such person do? I have thought long and hard about it, and the best thing I could think of was to write a letter to Muslim people to express my encouragement to them at this time.

And so I visited your website and read some of the e-mails that have previously been posted to you, before sending my own. I am deeply heavy-hearted after having done so. I am appalled at the content of some of these e-mails, and wish to state categorically that the distaste which I have for some of the comments made therein is the same in kind to that which I feel at the terrorist attacks in America themselves.

The only consolation I have is that these e-mails were posted by an equally unrepresentative, but similarly disturbing, group of extremists as those 'Muslim' fundamentalists who unfortunately misrepresent your faith in our media daily. I wish to assure you that no person in my acquaintance, whether friend or colleague, of whatever political, religious or social persuasion, has shown wishes to express anything but reassurance and support to Muslim people right now.

I write now to say that you are in my heart and in my prayers.

I'm an American living in Boston and was doing some research on the Muslim religion. I came upon your website and started reading the horrible emails your site has been receiving. It is a shame that there is so much hate in this world and some of it has preyed upon our democratic free civilization. But, the angry people who have sent you messages of hate are just as guilty in their words.

Hopefully this kind of treatment to your good people will end. We don't want to kill more innocent people, but the world must come together to stop the terrorists who are bent on some wild notion that we are bad people and must be punished.

I can't imagine how they can hate us so much, but then again history seems to repeat itself over and over. Hitler and his regime hated the Jews and successfully exterminated over 6 million.

Anyways I could go on and on.

shalom, salaam, peace.

I write to express my solidarity at this awful time. Please do not think that all non-Muslims share the racist, ignorant and bigotted views of the minority. There are many more people who welcome the contribution made by Muslims to the diversity, wealth and culture of this country, than there are who are too stupid to see it. In the hope of peace.

I just want to apologise to you on behalf of the non muslim community for any act of violence and abuse that any of your members have experienced since the happenings in America. I hope very much that President Bush will take into account in his war on terrorism his countries funding of the IRA over the years and stop the funding going through. At this time we dont need people to want to go down in history we need level heads and patient voices. My love and prayers to you all
